Today we found ourselves on an unfamiliar side of town; Oakland. The twins had an appointment on Forbes Street and it ended just before dinner time. I searched online for a new local restaurant for us to try, but I am the pickiest eater you'll ever meet so we agreed on Chick-Fil-A at the Waterfront.
Not wanting to completely waste an opportunity to try something new, I googled "ice cream near me" and was pleasantly surprised. A few places came up but the one that stood out the most was a place called Dave and Andy's Homemade Ice Cream.
We walked one block over and knew we had found something amazing when we saw the line out the door. We stood in line for a few minutes before noticing the "Cash Only" sign at the register. I wish that had been noted on their Google search page or even on the door would have been nice. We didn't think we had enough cash to get all four of us something so we left.
Heading back to the car we passed a Milkshake Factory. I couldn't help myself. I have been dying to try Jake's Shake since I saw an advertisement for it. They take credit cards so Emma and I looked through the menu for what she would get. I sent Ricky and Olivia back to Dave and Andy's since neither of them like milkshakes and we now had enough cash to cover it.
Dave and Andy's
This place boasts of 200+ flavors that they rotate through. They had about a dozen different flavors of scoopable ice cream available the day we went; plus other menu items.
Ricky got one scoop of chocolate chip cookie dough and one scoop of cookies 'n' creme in a waffle cone.
Olivia also went with chocolate chip cookie dough in a waffle cone.
The cookie dough ice cream was different from any other cookie dough ice cream we've gotten before. The way they mixed it in was almost as if the dough was "part" of the ice cream instead of small chunks just stuck in it. It was full spoonfuls of cookie dough too, not just the tiny pieces that you normally see. I think it's safe to say this is the best cookie dough ice cream that we've ever had.
The cookies 'n' creme was pretty standard. It was still good, but just not as noteworthy as the cookie dough.
Ricky ate a sample of the White Chocolate Brownie. He's not a fan of white chocolate normally, but he almost got a full scoop of it.
The waffle cones are also made on site. They are very crispy even with the ice cream melting inside.
The pricing was decent here. It was a little under $9 for three scoops in two waffle cones. Not the cheapest place we've seen, but also not even close to the most expensive.
The Milkshake Factory
I had heard great things about the Milkshake Factory from a co-worker. Her husband frequents the establishments and I've never heard a complaint from either of them.
Emma went with the Mint Cookies 'n' Creme. It came with a little chocolate mint square.
I got Jake's Shake. It came with a chocolate "59"
No one but Emma tasted the Mint Shake but she drank the whole thing so she must've enjoyed it.
Some of my favorite things are ice cream, chocolate, and caramel so this was the perfect milkshake for me. Swirls of caramel and chocolate lined the cup. The shake is made with cookies 'n' creme ice cream with whipped cream on top and a chocolate "59" for Jake's jersey number. My only complaint about it was it only comes in one size. I definitely wished there had been more!
Final Thoughts
Both of these are places we want to go to again. I don't see us heading to Oakland just to go to the Milkshake Factory, but I DO see us doing that for Dave and Andy's. Ricky is eager to try as many of Dave and Andy's flavors as he possibly can. So, you'll probably see several entries about this shop over the summer.
